Before the 1800s, ships were used to transfer data that took weeks to deliver a message. The first transatlantic cable in 1858 between Ireland and North America reduced communication time to minutes. It eventually paved way for modern day data transfer technologies like electrical cables, satellites and undersea cables which are disaster resistant. Data storage has also significantly changed whereby early computers stored megabytes only and today’s devices have terabytes. Since the 1990s, big data has been growing with technologies such as Hadoop, MapReduce and NoSQL databases changing data processing. Machine learning and AI now extract insights from vast datasets. Cloud computing, edge computing and real-time analytics are shaping the future of big data.
